Belize and Honduras join efforts to prevent trafficking in persons

High-level authorities of Belize and Honduras gathered in a binational discussion on the challenges to fight trafficking in persons, with IOM support. Representatives of multiple government institutions participated in this event that highlighted the interinstitutional response needed to prevent and combat trafficking in persons.

Costa Rica Celebrates National and Foreign Workers Month Highlighting Labour Migration Contributions

 

On May 27, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MTSS) with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), held the first national event to showcase concrete progress and actions aimed at the protection of labour rights with special focus on the migrant population.

IOM Trains Companies in Mexico for Ethical Recruitment under USMCA

 

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in coordination with the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE), developed two webinars to strengthen capacities on ethical recruitment and hiring within the business sector. Developed in April and May, the virtual sessions trained 72 people who hold managerial or human resources positions in Mexican companies.

RCM countries exchange good practices on recruitment and labor protection of migrants

The second part of the technical exchange of practices on fair recruitment and labor protection of migrant workers was held the 24 May 2021, as part of the Regional Conference on Migration. The session was led by the International Labour Organization, jointly moderated with the International Organization of Migration, and gathered the participation of 61 participants from 11 RCM Member Countries’ representatives, private sector and civil society organizations, as well as observer agencies.

More than 100 workers received identification cards in El Salvador

 El Salvador’s General Directorate for Migration (DGME) held the first day of the identification project for seasonal and cross-border workers and border inhabitants in the department of San Miguel, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This initiative consists of providing cross-border or seasonal workers with identification cards to facilitate their regular, safe and orderly transit across the border between El Salvador and Honduras.

IOM Launches Urban Gardens for Social Inclusion in Communities in San José, Costa Rica

With the goal of promoting social inclusion among the migrant and Costa Rican population, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched a project for urban gardens in two localities of the Costa Rican capital: La 25 de Julio in Hatillo and Relleno in Pavas. The activity was conducted jointly with the Municipality of San José.

Migration Officers Strengthen Their Capabilities to Communicate During Crises

A message transmitted in time can save someone’s life. With this premise, the Commission of Migration Authorities (OCAM) of the member countries of the Central America Integration System (SICA), in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), developed a regional workshop on emergency and migratory crisis communication. Migration officials from the areas of communication, press, migration control, and care for migrants from 8 different OCAM member countries, participated in a three-day workshop (May 18, 19, and 20) on the essential role of communication in these issues.

Panama and Costa Rica strengthen actions to combat migrant smuggling and cybercrime

With the aim of sharing good investigative practices among law enforcement, security, migration and judicial institutions that can strengthen the fight against crime, promote international cooperation and teach us more of the challenges faced by border police forces, Panama and Costa Rica, along with other allied states, participated in the III Binational Meeting on the Investigation of Illicit Trafficking of Migrants Linked to Cybercrime that took place on the 18th and 19th of May, 2021, in a blended session with virtual and on location participants.

  IOM trains COPECO in the inclusion of migrants during emergencies and crises in Honduras

On May 11, 12 and 14, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted a virtual event in which 25 volunteers from the Permanent Contingency Commission of Honduras (COPECO) participated in training sessions on migration. The knowledge acquired will enable them to strengthen their capacities to contribute to better inclusion of the migrant population in emergency and crisis preparedness and response.

IOM inaugurates MIDAS system at two new border crossings in Haiti

The Directorate of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) held the inauguration ceremony of the facilities of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at the Cap Haïtien International Airport and at the DIE border crossing in Ouanaminthe.
