The General Directorate of Migration of the Dominican Republic, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), closed the fourth day of the Induction Seminar for the Improvement of Migration Controls, Border Management and Culture of Peace, held on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November, in Dajabón.

The opening ceremony, chaired by Mr. Enrique García, Director General of Migration, was also attended by civil and military authorities, such as Lourdes Herrera, Chief of Cabinet of the Presidential Office; Lieutenant General Carlos Díaz Morfa, Minister of Defense; Juan Manuel Rosario, Deputy Minister of Migration Management and Naturalization, Wilfredo Lozano, Director of the National Institute of Migration; Josué Gastelbondo, Director of the International Organization of Migration (IOM); Santo Miguel Roman, Coordinator of IOM border programs; Eduardo Gallardo, representative of UNICEF, and Santiago Riverón, mayor of the municipality of Dajabón.

For the Director General of Migration, Enrique García, the occasion is historic because it brings together representatives of so many key institutions in the area of migration at a border point like Dajabón with the intention of sharing ideas and working in a coordinated manner.

This seminar - given in Villas CODEVIS in Dajabón - was offered during the month of November in 3 other locations: Santo Domingo for the officials of the central headquarters, Barahona for the officials of the south and Juan Dolió for the officials of the ports and airports of the eastern part of the country. Each one of these trainings was oriented to new officials, coordinators, people in charge of migratory control points (ports, airports and border points) and administrative managers.

Approximately 120 officials were trained in deportation procedures, interdiction, control and monitoring of due process, among other topics, with the support of the IOM. The organization took this opportunity to present to the participants the objectives of its mandate and its intention to cooperate with these institutions.

In parallel, the Directorate General of Migration is carrying out strategic planning for the next four years with the support of the IOM and funding from the European Union in the framework of the EU IcSP - IOM - UNICEF Project and with the support of the Western Hemisphere Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.
