IOM Publishes New Report on Free Movement of Persons in the Caribbean
On January 28, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released the results of a study on free movement of persons in the Caribbean. Completed in response to needs expressed by Caribbean States, the study analyzes the free movement agreements within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Organization for Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and seeks to support ongoing regional integration efforts across the Caribbean.
IOIM provides migration training to municipal staff and social attorneys of the Costa Rican bar association
On January 29th and 30th, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with support from the General Directorate of Migration and Aliens, the Ministry of Public Education and the Ministry of Work and Social Security, conducted a training for municipal staff and social attorneys of the local bar association. The participants will be providing counsel along with the Foundation for Peace and Democracy (FUMPADEM), for the strenghtening of capacities of the Municipal Migrant Centers (MMC) and the Centers for Migration Reference and Social Defense (CREDES).
First International Congress on Migrant Smuggling held in Costa Rica
The National Coalition on Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (CONATT) in Costa Rica organized the First International Congress on Migrant Smuggling December 2-3, 2019, with technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the participation of the country's various police authorities.
Labor migration management efforts in the region redoubled with new IOM-ILO agreement
On December 11, 2019 Marcelo Pisani, the director of IOM for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and Carmen Muñoz, the director of ILO Office for Central America, Haiti, Panama and the Dominican Republic, signed a collaboration agreement between their two United Nations agencies in order to continue with a wide range of joint actions on labor migration.
