Labor migration management efforts in the region redoubled with new IOM-ILO agreement

On December 11, 2019 Marcelo Pisani, the director of IOM for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and Carmen Muñoz, the director of ILO Office for Central America, Haiti, Panama and the Dominican Republic, signed a collaboration agreement between their two United Nations agencies in order to continue with a wide range of joint actions on labor migration.

The countries of the Regional Coalition against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (CORETT) identified over 1,300 victims of human trafficking in 2018

The plenary meeting of the Regional Coalition against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (CORETT) was held November 19-21 in the Dominican Republic, with participation from representatives of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize, and the Dominican Republic.

The Regional Conference on Migration's relaunch process

The 24th Regional Conference on Migration (RCM) was held November 12-14 in Guatemala City, under the presidency pro tempore of Guatemala. The motto of the conference was “Relaunching the Regional Conference on Migration as a consultation process in the context of the current migration dynamic.”

IOM supports the proposal of special law on work permits in Honduras

Tegucigalpa, November 11, 2019.- The International Organization for Migration (IOM), with technical support from the International Labor Organization (ILO), is assisting the Secretariat of Labor and Social Security of the Republic of Honduras in the process of drafting a proposal for a Special Law on Labor Authorization for Foreign Nationals in Honduras, with the goal of facilitating the integration of migrants into the Honduran labor market.

Panama- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the School of Public Administration of the University of Panama launched the second iteration of the professional development Diploma “Migration, Human Rights, and Public Policy,” which was first offered in 2017.

The IADB and IOM offer specialized virtual courses on migration governance and management

A partnership between the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), within the frameworks of the IABD's Migration Initiative and IOM’s Regional Migration Capacity-Building Program, will enable officials in Latin America and the Caribbean to complete free virtual trainings on topics related to migration governance and management and earn certificates.

Guatemala raises awareness about recruitment scams

“Ask, notice, and check” is the message of Guatemala’s campaign to people interested in migrating, telling them to inform themselves about fraudulent job offers, primarily in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It was developed by the Ministry of Foreign Relations and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare of Guatemala with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in response to the high numbers of reported scams involving jobs abroad.

IOM-Canada partnership supports efforts to communicate the Risks of Irregular Migration in Central America

The Government of Canada’s Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) has partnered with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to deter prospective migrants in Central America from using irregular migration pathways, directing those interested to regular pathways, while also increasing cooperation with local stakeholders in responding to migration challenges in the region.
