Migration Officers Strengthen Their Capabilities to Communicate During Crises

A message transmitted in time can save someone’s life. With this premise, the Commission of Migration Authorities (OCAM) of the member countries of the Central America Integration System (SICA), in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), developed a regional workshop on emergency and migratory crisis communication. Migration officials from the areas of communication, press, migration control, and care for migrants from 8 different OCAM member countries, participated in a three-day workshop (May 18, 19, and 20) on the essential role of communication in these issues.

Panama and Costa Rica strengthen actions to combat migrant smuggling and cybercrime

With the aim of sharing good investigative practices among law enforcement, security, migration and judicial institutions that can strengthen the fight against crime, promote international cooperation and teach us more of the challenges faced by border police forces, Panama and Costa Rica, along with other allied states, participated in the III Binational Meeting on the Investigation of Illicit Trafficking of Migrants Linked to Cybercrime that took place on the 18th and 19th of May, 2021, in a blended session with virtual and on location participants.

  IOM trains COPECO in the inclusion of migrants during emergencies and crises in Honduras

On May 11, 12 and 14, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted a virtual event in which 25 volunteers from the Permanent Contingency Commission of Honduras (COPECO) participated in training sessions on migration. The knowledge acquired will enable them to strengthen their capacities to contribute to better inclusion of the migrant population in emergency and crisis preparedness and response.

IOM inaugurates MIDAS system at two new border crossings in Haiti

The Directorate of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) held the inauguration ceremony of the facilities of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at the Cap Haïtien International Airport and at the DIE border crossing in Ouanaminthe.

IOM and the Public Ministry of Costa Rica strengthen local efforts to combat human trafficking and smuggling of migrants

 

This April, Costa Rica held the First Annual Meeting of Local Working Groups for the Integral Fight against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants. The activity included a presentation of the results of the work that the groups have conducted since they were formed last year, and the needs identified at the local level to combat these crimes.

IOM trains Dominica tourism stakeholders to improve disaster response plans

IOM, in partnership with the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), conducted a two-day workshop in April 2021, on the topic “Protecting Visitors to Dominica in Times of Crisis”.  The workshop produced rich feedback from a broad range of stakeholders, based on local case studies shared during the programme, recounting experiences of service providers during Tropical Storm Erika and Hurricane Maria in Dominica.

Guatemala: IOM and migration authority launched course on national regulations and human mobility

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) launched the online Course on the Migration Code and its regulations, a tool aimed at the staff of government institutions involved in the migration process, civil society, academia and interested citizens.

Costa Rica: IOM Trained the Municipal Emergency Committee of Talamanca to Include Migrants in Crisis Situations

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) trained staff of the Municipal Emergency Committee of Talamanca, Costa Rica, on the importance of incorporating the migrant population in emergency plans and programmes. The activity addressed the current context of national and international migration, care and protection for vulnerable groups, migrants in emergency situations, and strategies to assist and include this population.

Dominican Republic starts pilot design of border inhabitant card to identify merchants on the border with Haiti

The Dominican Republic initiated a pilot plan for a program to identify border inhabitants coming from the Republic of Haiti. This plan will create a sustained policy of formalization, organization and modernization of the daily entry processes of small traders from Haiti, with the objective of strengthening migration control and establishing institutional normality for small border commerce.

New Information Hub on Migration opens in San Luis Potosi, the eighteenth in Mexico

The city of San Luis Potosí became today the eighteenth place in Mexico from which the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and municipal authorities will offer updated and truthful information for migrants to carry out their migratory processes in an informed, regular and safe manner.
